At Platts Agriculture, we recognise that no two farms are the same. From physical setup to location and budget, that’s why we’ve developed our product range to offer more choice than ever, helping meet the varying demands across the industry. With an established range of both bulk and baled bedding, all produced to a high and consistent standard, we wanted to expand this further.
With a clear focus on cost, both to support farmers and reflect ongoing pressures across the industry such as falling milk prices and rising fuel and fertiliser costs, we developed Fibrebed. A free-flowing softwood bulk bedding designed for those looking for a more economical option that still delivers reliable performance, backed by the same Platts quality.
What is Fibrebed?
Fibrebed is a dry, fibrous softwood sawdust produced from recycled materials and manufactured to a consistent, controlled standard, meaning a U8 exemption is required for use on farm. Available in bulk only, it provides a cost-effective bedding option for farmers looking to achieve good coverage while managing overall spend.
Its fibrous structure and higher dust content allow it to spread effectively, delivering consistent coverage in line with the Platts principle that a little goes a long way. This consistency also contributes to strong absorbency, helping to keep cattle dry and clean by reducing the conditions in which bacteria can thrive, and supporting improved somatic cell counts and a reduction in mastitis cases.
Fibrebed provides a soft and comfortable lying surface and is one of our most versatile products, suitable for all cattle housing systems. It can be used as a deep bed in loose housing or applied more sparingly on mats and mattresses, depending on the system in place.

What is a U8 exemption code and why is it needed?
As Fibrebed is made from recycled wood, its use on farm requires a U8 waste exemption to be in place.
This is a standard Environment Agency registration that allows certain recovered materials to be used as animal bedding under controlled conditions, and for most farms it is a straightforward process.
- Free to register
- Completed online
- Valid for three years
Registration typically only takes a few minutes, and once in place, there is nothing further required day-to-day.
You can find more information or register here. Many farms will already have a U8 exemption in place, particularly where recycled materials are used elsewhere on the unit. If not, it can be put in place quickly ahead of using Fibrebed.
An economical bedding, built on Platts standards
Lower-cost bedding can often lead to higher costs over time, particularly where performance falls short. Fibrebed offers a more economical option that maintains the standards expected in the shed, without the higher price point of premium bedding.
Reflecting the ongoing pressures across the industry, Fibrebed provides an opportunity to reduce bedding costs without cutting corners on quality. It delivers the consistency and reliability needed to support day-to-day performance across the yard.
Fibrebed is produced to the same trusted standards as the rest of the Platts range, giving confidence in its consistency and performance. It is supplied in bulk and delivered by our reliable transport team, with flexible delivery options to suit your setup, alongside the option to spread the cost through our interest-free direct debit payment plan.
